One of the hardest things about working from home is if you get transferred into a new department. There’s that period of time where you don’t feel like you’re part of the team due to the lack of involvement and understanding about what’s going on. Last week’s visit to HQ and this past week’s working on some group projects I think has helped me to get over that problem. Now the department can see I can write basic scripts, I now interact more with the team and now we’re all on internal IRC and being “goofy” which also helps build the team feeling instead of “here, fix this” and “have you see if X is working?”
Anyway, being a part of the group you work with is important, makes the day go faster and makes work much easier.
Java now is sitting in the other room saying “I’m a chicken” over and over as I write this. His previous string of words was:
“java, go poo, go poo, step up, good boy, good boy mr java, good boy java, go poo java, go poo, go poo java, go poo, go poo, java go poo! good boy! -wolf whistle- what’cha doin’? I’m a chicken! I’m a chicken! I’m a chicken!”
The “I’m a chicken” sounds a bit more like “I’m a cheeken” sometimes, but it’s clear enough. I’ll hopefully get a recording of the new chicken phrase to post on his site later.
Birds are cool
Ok, so 3 days off… it starts 8am Saturday morning with a page from work (I’m pager bitch this week).. 1.5 hours and many phone calls later we taught the guy who first called us how to do his own job which was to fix the problem. Mostly uneventful after that.. Sunday did housework ‘n such.. Monday morning started with a 7:30am page from work which got forwarded to another group followed by an 11am page which I closed the ticket for after explaining that we weren’t responsible for the machine in question. Now.. trying to decide what to do today.. so far it’s going to be a trip out to visit a few people ovr near SDSU and I’ll probably take my bird along since he enjoys trips.
Why is it always easier to comment on other people’s stuff than to write your own posts? ..and why does it all come to you at once that you should write.. and then go away for like a month? ..and why is it so damned cold at night in San Diego where it’s supposed to be warm year-round? ..and.. er wait.. nevermind, was getting lost with questions there.
Some conclusions I recently came to…
1) The journey often is more fun than the ending.
2) Self-control is the key to getting what you want, although sometimes it can be difficult to sit down and take control
3) Try to relax and enjoy the moment ’cause in a minute you’ll be dealing with many things and looking forward to that time where you can relax again.
4) Take care of you.. nobody else will - and YOU need to be taken care of before you can work on anyone/anything else.
5) Don’t leave your corn flakes on the shelf too long or you’ll breed mealworms.
6) You don’t have to be happy with what you have as long as you are content with what you have. Looking forward to getting the other things or making the plans can be more fun than getting everything you “want”.
