Previously I had the Siemens SX66. A number of issues with it caused me to look for a replacement. If I wanted to use the GRPS, a reboot was needed. If I wanted to use bluetooth, another reboot (not enough memory for bluetooth drivers otherwise). Occasionally, when picking up the phone (ougoing or incoming) there would be no sound.. reboot would solve it. ..other than the above issues, was great to have instant messaging, e-mail, ssh, IRC, etc handy any time. Also, last time I went to jury duty, it was quite handy to have a set of videos to watch.
The Cingular 8125 is actually the “HTC Wizard”, the Siemens SX66 was the “HTC Blue Angel”.. so same people behind the technology.
..so.. how does the Cingular 8125 stand up?
There are a number of changes to the device from Blue Angel to Wizard.
One of the biggest changes between the 2 units is that the previous processor was a 400MHz Intel. The new processor is 200MHz TI. It looks like there was a mix-up and someone put a slower processor in the newer unit.. but the processors are different design and the speed is not just in the MHz rating. The performance is better than the Blue Angel, so they went in the right direction.
The other improvements worth mentioning..
The keyboard - by sliding the keyboard out the side instead of the bottom and making the display go to landscape mode, it allowed them to make the keys larger and this makes it wonderful to SSH on a landscape screen with large keys.
The Internet - EDGE is finally supported, this is Cingular’s GPRS higher speed network. It’s good to be online at high speed.. and without needing a reboot.
They added a 1.3MP camera. So far I’m not impressed with the pictures, but “it’s better than nothing”. I went ahead and added a FTP client to my device so I can upload pictures as I take them. You can see them here.
So, yes.. very happy with the 8125. Does everything I want it to so far.
