Another major project completed, this one with feedback.. someone must have read my previous post. This project went smooth and the way I think things should go..
Project explained, other tech given their piece of the project to do.
My piece of the project included grabbing the info from the other tech, using the information to fill out a Word template to make it available for download.
I gave feedback to the other tech asking for a basic report view of the info in a certain format on a webpage.. they created it.
I created the updated parser, grabbed the info, tested, and gave the other tech the link from their site to mine.. and the project was done (except for the normal mini fixes)..
Feedback from boss and others was that they were happy with the results and that it will save a lot of time… YAY ..anyway, back to work.
Over the last few weeks I’ve been working on a major project at work.. took a site that was a pain to update and a pain to get information from and created a new system:
A site that is generated hourly from data
A easy data entry system which reduces the places we enter data to 1 page
A site that conforms to all Intranet standards
A system which required no modifications to the “supported” architecture of the machines we run this on.
A windows application which uses the new data and provides an easy to use interface for the end user..
..unfortunately, the response from management has felt less than enthusiastic. No word back about success or failure tests, no word at all..
Kinda depressing, but I guess after a little while, I’ll get more feedback, hopefully positive.
I dunno how this ever worked out, but I’m kinda excited (again) about my job. Recently it had been getting a bit boring with the same old “user says this is broken and thinks is our fault, but in reality is someone else’s fault (and someone else’s job to fix)” type work… I had been a receptionist for technical problems “thank you for calling, what kind of problem are you reporting? oh really? that’s probably X’s issue, one second and i’ll transfer the ticket to them”. But Friday, that changed again (slightly). I still do the above items and I’m still doing some other frustrating work.. but I also just had a project approved that I wanted to do. The project opens doors for automating MANY things in the department and also will bring some previous projects of mine back to life and give me some fun things to work on and program.
Let the fun begin.
Ok, so I setup a time to go up to Sacramento to meet with the group I work with.. and then planned to spend 1 day in San Fransisco at the main office with the boss.. and then head home. It was a nice simple trip.. under $200 round trip, stay at the same hotel I did last time so I know where I’m going.. all is perfect.
Then I try to fly up to Sacramento and find out that I had apparently setup to go via the wrong airport… next flight was in the afternoon (2pm).. and that was only to LAX.. then I’d have to see if they could get me on standby to Sacramento.
Screw that.. I drove.. got into town at 4pm (before the late flight would have arrived).. checked in to the hotel, cancelled the rental car.. all was well. Went to work, uneventful, went home. Next day the plan was to drive down to San Fransisco.. a quick 2.5 hour drive and I was there.. worked there during the day and then had coffee with a friend from work. Time was about 7:30, I expected the trip to be faster since it was not rush hour…
Driving back from San Fransisco to Sacramento.. I decided to stop for a quick minute at a Starbucks over near the 3Com stadium.. grabbed a drink and then realized there was no way back on to the highway where I was. I started driving around in what I felt was the right direction… so about 20min later I come across Mission street.. later followed by Lombard street [didn’t drive it], passed Fisherman’s wharf and ended up going over the Golden Gate bridge. I got back to the hotel about 11pm.
At least I have something to show for the adventure *g*:

Anyway, tonight at a bit before 7pm I finally made it home after stopping for Subway for dinner.. not bad for leaving at 8:30am from Sacramento.. (if it weren’t for LA traffic I’d have been home at 3:30pm)
For those who haven’t seen…

That picture is from Oracle HQ up in San Fransisco. It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. (click for the full sized pic)
