Having experienced the best and the worst of exactly what you are speaking of, I have to say overall, I prefer the new availability of meeting people of diverse interests, education, upbringing, nationality, and residence online to the more closed version of life known before the internet became so widely available, but I do think people fail to stop and realize how much online life must of necessity mirror our RL. Put simply, if you wouldn't walk out your front door and do it, why in the world would you do it anywhere outside your door online?

I, too, met the love of my life online, and I experience a happiness with him I never would have hoped for on a daily basis, but I we also took our time, developed the relationship both in RL and our online life over a period of years, and our lives are much the richer for that.

Thanks for a thought provoking post.

Yes. My theory is that those of us who were on BBSs in the early '90s and made our way onto the Internet in the mid to late '90s had it easier.

The roads were narrower and cars went slower. Today, it's like dropping kids onto the 405 at 4:30pm.

I remember just emailing people to get a response from another person. Or getting on a public cuseeme reflector. Or joining random irc channels.

Now I only talk to people I already know because I've seen what happens when something becomes ubiquitous.

I imagine the old timers remember just calling people to hear voices. Then there was a period of semi-coolness and then the prank callers and the real bullies.

I also like the concept of GIFT:

It doesn't have to be the Internet, that's just whats trendy now.

I saw them a few years back selling stuff via infomercial and was immediately skeptical of their business integrity. That said, a friend of our family ordered from there and didn't have any problems, so here's to hoping it's just a snafu they'll iron out for ya ;)

And if not, make some dns changes to redirect a certain network towards their network :D har har

Ok, you know me as Partington is SL.

How'd I found you? I was searching for the Chattadicts page and forgot the address, so searched for Wagahai and found your 'corner'.

I hate reading Blogs, I always feel I'm snooping, but I read anyway.

Your post actually brought a lump to my throat and a litle tear to my eye (only a little one you understand *cough, cough* in a manly way).

I met my wife in the US (she's from the UK though like me), we were both travelling 'around the world', we spent 9-months travelling together around the US, but then she had to head home. I carried on through Australia and Asia for another 9-months, but my heart just wasn't in it anymore, needed to get home.

We've been together since 1990 and went back to where we met (Key West) to get married in 1995. Since then, we moved to the Great White North and had a baby boy. The story continues.

I really wish you all the best, such a great story. Being with someone over such distances can be a bind, but worth it. When we did it, we didn't have e-mail, it was all snail mail and PO boxes, or expensive international payphone calls. Your story brought back great memories for me.

Steve (or PG or Partington or whatever)

I was thinking about radio today when access to my CDs was blocked by a 17 inch monitor I was taking to my parents place.

Anyway, I think any reason I *did* listen to a certain radio station is because I knew what genre of music to expect from them. When I listen to mp3s, its random random random, which can be nice, but I never really listen by genre. Flip on the radio, and wallah! Genre music!

If more radio stations switch to Jack's format, why would I EVER stay listening to any one station when I can flip all over the place once I get sick of that ONE decent song they played?

Dunno, just seems pretty short-sighted to me. But this coming from a guy that doesn't really listen to radio anymore anyway :)

I never mind people having the option to speak their mind or having a discussion, it's when the single comment is made without any discussion that it's simply wrong.
